Ruou Can Vietnam

Ruou can (wine drunk out of a jar through pipes) is a popular wine in central highland region. Drinking ruou can has long become a cultural activity for ethnic groups in Vietnam. Recent years, the wine appears not only in mountainous region-based ethnic groups’ stilt houses but also in cities that it is considered as a unique specialty.

Ingredients of ruou can include sticky rice, rice, cassava… which are cooked and let cold. Then, sprinkle ferment on, and mix it well then cover tightly it for a couple of days. As soon as the process of fermentation is completed, the whole brew is put into a jar and let stand for one month. Ethnic groups often drink the wine through a bamboo straw of over 1m in length.

The host pours water into ruou can and guests take sips from the straw. Visiting Binh Dinh central province, tourists will feel the national spirit after enjoying ruou can made by mountaineers.
