Officials Urge Patience During Events in EA (East Aurora Advertiser)

With the visit of the American Veterans Traveling Tribute, the Outdoor Art Exhibition, Roycroft Summer Festival and other events, East Aurora is likely to be a busy place at the close of this week. Add the Main Street reconstruction, and travel in and around the village may become somewhat challenging.

Knowledge of local roadways, use of shuttles and a willingness to walk can certainly help area residents, but officials are asking citizens to use an even more important tool: patience.

The American Veterans Traveling Tribute will arrive accompanied by a motorcycle escort Thursday, heading down Maple Road and over Girard Avenue toward Knox Farm State Park around 2 to 2:30 p.m. The International Junior Masters golf tournament at the East Aurora Country Club, to the north of the village, will wrap up Friday evening. The Outdoor Art Exhibition and the Roycroft Summer Festival will take place on Main Street near Grove Street on Saturday and Sunday, with Baker Memorial Church’s Strawberry Festival and Jumble Sale down the street on Saturday. The high school graduation on Center Street will be Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to the Aurora Town Board Monday night about the planned events, Police Chief Ronald Krowka declared, “We’re going to need a lot of patience this weekend,” adding that the police will be ready should issues arise. The East Aurora Fire Department has also noted that care and caution should be used when moving in crowded areas, and that drivers should plan for delays.

The American Veterans Traveling Tribute alone is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Knox Farm State Park. “Due to parking limitations at the park, we are running three satellite lots in and around town and providing shuttles,” said Bill Kuppel, chairman of the veterans tribute committee for Post 362. “We’re also providing shuttles from the arts festival area up and back – if you’re parked, stay parked, don’t add to the gridlock.” The shuttles will take routes that avoid the village center.

Veterans tribute visitors can park at Christ the King Seminary on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; Commerce Green/LSI on Saturday and Sunday; and Parkdale School on Saturday and Sunday. The main parking area will be at the Knox Road polo fields, but organizers warn that the lot can handle only a very limited number of vehicles. Handicap parking access can be made through the iron gate park entrance on Buffalo Road.

FTA with Vietnam set as EU priority under Swedish presidency (Vietnam Net)

VietNamNet Bridge - The European Union (EU) is moving ahead on negotiations on a free trade pact specific to Vietnam , a long process that is expected to be complete by October 2010, said a ranking European Commission officer on July 1, adding that the pact is an EU priority now, under the new presidency of Sweden.

The remarks were made by Sean Doyle, Ambassador and Head of the EU delegation to Vietnam, at a press briefing in Hanoi on the occasion of Sweden assuming its six-month presidency.

According to Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam , Rolf Bergman, a free trade agreement (FTA) with Vietnam is one of his country’s top three priorities as it takes the reign for the second half of this year.

“Hopefully we will be able to increase the amount of trade between Vietnam and the EU because the whole point of growth is that if you trade more, you make more business for everybody, everybody earns more money. That is how we get more prosperity and further development,” he said.

The EU took up the idea of individual FTA’s with member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), rather than the bloc-to-bloc model, after the 7 th round of EU-ASEAN negotiations in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia this March ended with no progress, forcing a temporary halt to the process.

The EU is currently ASEAN’s second largest partner, accounting for 11.7 percent of its total external trade turnover in 2006. Trade between Vietnam and the EU soared to 10.8 billion Euros in 2007 from 5.5 billion Euro in 2000.

The EU is now pushing to build upon existing developmental and economic assistance towards a more comprehensive socio-political relationship with Vietnam through a partnership and cooperation agreement (PCA), which will allow “much more contact at all levels” between the two sides.

According to Bergman, the PCA would “open the door to all kinds of cooperation. Until now we have agreements on development assistance and trade, but the new agreement will go into areas such as climate change, migration security, science and technology and research.”

The PCA would be a new agreement to replace the expiring bilateral cooperation agreement signed between the EU and Vietnam in 1995. It would be developed on the basis of a more equal partnership rather than the old relationship of EU, as a donor, and Vietnam , as a recipient country.

The Swedish ambassador also confirmed continued support for Vietnam in the areas of governance and anticorruption – on which Vietnam and the EU have had many dialogues so far.

“I am sure that with the Swedish presidency and in the spirit of real friendship and support for Vietnam , we will be able to have strong dialogue and have a lot [more progress] in those areas,” he added.

Also at the press briefing, the ambassador said Sweden , as the new EU president, will focus on dealing with the financial crisis, creating more employment for EU citizens and combating climate change.

Vietnam leads in foreign arrivals to Cambodia

Vietnam took the lead in the number of foreign arrivals to Cambodia in the first five months of the year with 122,000 tourists, accounting for 12.8 percent.

According to the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, countries that recorded surges in arrivals to Cambodia during the period also included the US with 69,000 people, up 1.4 percent; the UK with 50,000 people, up 15.8 percent; and France with 47,000 people, up 5.5 percent.

Lao tourists to Cambodia sharply rose by 149 percent over the same period last year with 41,000 people thanks to Cambodia ’s simplified customs procedures and the completion of a road linking the two countries.

By the end of May, Cambodia attracted nearly 950,000 foreign tourists, a 2.3 percent decrease compared to last year’s correspondent period.
