Jan. 2009: Garments, Textiles, Leather Products and Footwear Exports Hit Nearly US $1 Billion
Garments and textiles won over crude oil to bring in US$ 550 million worth of export turnover back in January, 2009 despite the downbeat forecasts which were given at the end of last year.
The Viet Nam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas)’s Deputy Chairman, Pham Xuan Hong, said that the volume of his sector’s export commodities was reduced by about $US 180 million against the same period in 2008.
In spite of following behind crude oil in export turnover, the leather products and footwear sector still saw an optimistic start to the year with an export turnover of US$ 350 million in January, 2009. Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso) Chairman Nguyen Duc Thuan said that January’s high export turnover was mainly thanks to old contracts from 2008. (TT)
