Mekong Delta farmers reap large profits as rice prices increase

VNBusinessNews – Farmers in Mekong Delta have seen profits 40% higher for this year’s winter-spring rice crop as prices have risen sharply.

High quality rice was bought from VND4,200 to 4,400 per kilogram, while perfume rice varieties sold for up to VND5,700 per kilogram.

Traders have bought Tai Nguyen variety, widely grown in Bac Lieu and Soc Trang Provinces, at VND6,000 per kilogram for wet rice VND7,000 for dried rice.

Local agricultural officials said that growing costs had fallen to around VND2 million ($114) per ton, up to VND1 million per ton lower than last year.

Farmers have so far harvested more than 300,000 hectares from 1.5 million hectares of the winter-spring crop, at an average productivity of 5.5 tons of rice per hectare.
