Rice exports approach 4.5 million tonnes
Domestic businesses have recently exported a total of 234,900 tonnes of rice, worth over US$100 million.
Since the beginning of this year, the country has exported nearly 4.5 million tonnes of rice with a turnover of US$2.57 billion.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecasts rice shortages will continue to be a problem next year due to the financial crisis and reduction in investment capital for agriculture.
Meanwhile, many great rice export countries such as India and Thailand have plans to stockpile rice to ensure food security. In addition, it is estimated that rice consumption in the world will increase to 426 million tonnes next year, up 1% against this year.
