Vietnam seizes 7 tons of elephant tusks

HANOI, Vietnam - Authorities in northern Vietnam have confiscated nearly seven tons of elephant tusks smuggled from Africa in the country’s biggest-ever such seizure, state media reported Saturday.

Customs officials in the northern port city of Haiphong on Friday discovered the tusks in a container shipped from Tanzania, the Liberated Saigon newspaper said.

Tonnes of elephant tusks smuggled into Vietnam: reports

HANOI (AFP) - - Vietnam customs officials have uncovered up to five tonnes of elephant tusks smuggled in from Tanzania, state media said Saturday.

The tusks were found Friday hidden in around 114 boxes of plastic waste after being transported from Africa through Malaysia to Vietnam’s northern Hai Phong port, said the Tuoi Tre newspaper.

Vietnam protests China’s tourist plan near islands

HANOI, Vietnam - Vietnam has protested a Chinese tourist company’s plan to begin tourist trips to the disputed Paracel archipelago in the South China Sea.

China and Vietnam have argued for years over the Paracels and the Spratlys islands. Largely uninhabited, the island chains are believed to be rich in oil and natural gas. They straddle busy sea lanes and are rich fishing grounds.

The man was from the northern province of Ninh Binh and died Wednesday at a disease clinic in Hanoi.

Funeral services held for Vietnam’s Cardinal Pham

HANOI, Vietnam - Thousands of people attended funeral services Thursday for Cardinal Paul Joseph Pham Dinh Tung, the retired archbishop of Hanoi and advocate for restoring ties between Vietnam and the Vatican.

Tung’s funeral was held at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. He was to be buried on the church grounds. Tung died Sunday at the age of 89.

10 die in Vietnam bus crash, including 9 Russians

HANOI, Vietnam - Police say a speeding bus fell off a cliff in southern Vietnam, killing at least 10 people. Nine were Russian tourists.

Eight people died instantly, and two died later in the hospital. Fourteen others remain hospitalized, some in critical condition, said Nguyen Van Lam, a police officer in Binh Thuan province.
