Phu Quoc "Vietnam"s hottest new tourist destination" – i-to

The island of Phu Quoc has been described as the hottest new tourist destination in Vietnam by one travel writer. In an article for the LA Times, David Lamb said it offers a “slice of tropical perfection” thanks to its uncrowded beaches and its dense rainforests. He claimed the island’s laid-back atmosphere reminds travellers of what Phuket in Thailand used to be like a generation ago.Although Phu Quoc is slowly opening up to the world, it remains authentic and is free of the high-rise buildings that can be found elsewhere in Vietnam.Indeed, Mr Lamb explained that many visitors to the country head to the island to recharge their batteries after a busy trip to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.He explained that Vietnamese and Chinese farmers and fishermen settled on Phu Quoc in the 17th century before the French colonialists occupied it in 1869.Mr Lamb said he hoped that Phu Quoc never loses its character in the “tidal wave of coming development” since it is “about perfect as it is”.
