Vietnam protests China’s tourist plan near islands

AP – Friday, March 13

HANOI, VietnamVietnam has protested a Chinese tourist company’s plan to begin tourist trips to the disputed Paracel archipelago in the South China Sea.

China and Vietnam have argued for years over the Paracels and the Spratlys islands. Largely uninhabited, the island chains are believed to be rich in oil and natural gas. They straddle busy sea lanes and are rich fishing grounds.

Government spokesman Le Dung says, "Vietnam is in deep concern and strongly opposes the plan, permitted by the Chinese government, to tour the island."
