Vietnam seizes 7 tons of elephant tusks

AP – Saturday, March 7

HANOI, Vietnam – Authorities in northern Vietnam have confiscated nearly seven tons of elephant tusks smuggled from Africa in the country’s biggest-ever such seizure, state media reported Saturday.

Customs officials in the northern port city of Haiphong on Friday discovered the tusks in a container shipped from Tanzania, the Liberated Saigon newspaper said.

Saturday’s Capital Security newspaper reported that Vietnam may have been a transit point, and that the final destination was another country. It did not say what the final destination was.

Tusks were to be used for jewelry and home decorations.

Vietnam bans the hunting of the country’s dwindling elephant population, which poachers value highly for their tusks.
