First Solar delays plans for Vietnam production
First Solar Inc. announced it will continue developing its Mesa, Ariz., solar panel production facility but will not develop a planned factory in Vietnam next year.
The Tempe-based company said it was consolidating its operations to provide equipment, as well as research and development to further its operations.
“This consolidation will help us to balance our production with market demand, while still providing local capacity to supply our U.S. project pipeline and the broader American market,” said interim CEO Mike Ahearn in a statement.
The company’s Mesa facility represents a $300 million investment that is slated to bring 600 jobs to the region. It represented a large project for the Phoenix area’s economic development community, which had competed against several other states to land the factory.
