Robert g. vasquez, 85
Robert G. Vasquez, age 85, of Pasadena, Calif., passed away on Feb. 7, 2014 at Inland Valley Care and Rehabilitation Facility in Pomona Calif. He was born in Globe, Ariz. on Dec. 27, 1928, the son of Juan and Maria Vasquez.
He grew up in Globe and attended Globe High School. In November 1950 he was drafted into the U.S. Army.
After basic training his unit, the 224th Infantry Regiment, was sent to Korea. In November 1953 he was discharged from the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, Wash.
He returned to Globe and went to work at the Magma Copper Company in Superior, Ariz. In 1956 he rejoined the U.S. Army. He served a tour in Germany. He was then sent to Vietnam, where he served two tours. While there, he was assigned to the 117th Aviation Company as a gunner on a Huey helicopter.
He received several awards and decorations while serving his tours in Korea and Vietnam. These awards include the Air Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Japan and Germany clasps, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, United Nations Korean Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Upon his return from his second Vietnam tour, he was discharged and stayed in California. He worked with the Salvation Army for many years.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Maria Vasquez; and brothers, Manuel G. Vasquez, Edward G. Vasquez, John G. Vasquez and sisters Lupe V. Yanez and Katie V. Dominguez. Robert is survived by his brother, Richard G. Vasquez of Casa Grande, Ariz.; Joe G. Vasquez of Gold Canyon, Ariz. and sister, Margaret V. Sanchez of Tucson, Ariz. He is also survived by his nephews and nieces.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Interment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Cave Creek.
